 THINGS TO REMEMBER ABOUT
 DRAFT horse bits
by
sara shalda
custom bit maker
.

1.
MOST DRAFT BITS ARE NOT MADE FOR RIDING
.
THIS MEANS NEITHER THE DESIGNER NOR THE MANUFACTURER
 PAYS MUCH ATTENTION TO
IMPORTANT THINGS LIKE BALANCE, PURITY OF METALS,
TIGHTNESS OF SEALS, PINCH POINTS
STRUCTURAL INTEGRITY, APPLICABLE USAGE, TRAINING USEFULNESS
THEY USUALLY JUST MAKE THEM BIG AND STRONG WHICH IS FINE FOR
DRIVING HORSES,NOT FOR RIDING HORSES.
.
IF YOU WANT TO HAVE A REALLY GOOD one that is.
.
IF YOU JUST WANT A TRAIL PLODDER, THEN DON'T WORRY TOO MUCH-ABOUT
 WHAT BIT YOU USE.
.
I ...AS A PROFESSIONAL HORSES TRAINER MUST
PAY GREAT ATTENTION TO THESE THINGS:
.
I MUST KEEP AN CLOSE EYE ON CONDITION OF MY EQUIPMENT
.
I MUST KEEP IT CLEAN
.
MY BITS MUST STAY OILED IF THEY HAVE ENCASED PIECES
.
.
.
.
.
.

2.
STAINLESS IS ALWAYS PREFERABLE
.
ITS EASIER TO MODIFY AND ALTER- WELD ETC.
 ITS HEALTHIER FOR THE HORSES.
ITS EASIER TO CLEAN .
  IT TASTES BETTER.
 IT LAST LONGER
.
.
.
.
.

3. SWEET IRON PORTS
THAT ENCOURAGE SALVATION ARE
NOT
 BETTER THAN STAINLESS
.
IF YOU DON'T BELIEVE ME... PUT one IN YOUR MOUTH.
.
NOW PRETEND THERE IS A RIDER ON YOUR BACK
ASKING YOU TO CONCENTRATE AND PERFORM HIGHLY DEMANDING MANEUVERS.
.
THE IRON TASTE WORSE.
  IT IS A DISTRACTION
ANYTHING THAT BOTHERS YOU IS A DISTRACTION.
FLIES. DUST, A BIT THAT MAKES YOU DRUEL ALL OVER THE PLACE.
.
A RIDER THAT CAN'T MAKE UP HIS MIND WHAT HE WANTS
THIS WILL INHIBIT YOUR TRAINING ,
(WITH MOST HORSES, NOT ALL)
COPPER IS GOOD BUT HARDEST TO MODIFY-WELD-ETC
.
.
.
a horses mouth does not
repeat
not have to be overly salivated to be sensitive
.
.
.
.
.

4.  BIGGER IS NOT BETTER
.
IF YOU WANT A HORSE WITH A
LIGHT MOUTH,
ONE THAT IS  VERY RESPONSIVE TO
LIGHT CONTACT , SMALLER AND LIGHTER IS BETTER.
.
YOU WANT TO KEEP THE WEIGHT OF THE BIT AS LIGHT AS POSSIBLE,
.
KEEP THE PORT TINY AND LIGHT AS POSSIBLE.
MANY OF MY SNAFFLES ONLY HAVE A 1/16  OR 1/8  DIAMETER
.
.
.
.
.
.
.

5.  ONE HORSE NEEDS DIFFERENT BITS FOR DIFFERENT REASONS
a HORSE'S TRAINING WILL CHANGE.
.
 a HORSE'S MOOD WILL CHANGE.
AGE WILL CHANGE.
.
  EXPERIENCE WILL CHANGE.
RIDER MAY CHANGE
.
you need to be prepared and equipped
.
.
.
.
.
.

6.  YOU DON'T NEED A BIT
.
HACKMORES WORK JUST FINE.
.
THEY CAN BE  AS EFFECTIVE AS ANY BIT .
.
THERE ARE TWO TYPES...MECHANICAL AND NON MECHANICAL
.
.
.
.
see hackamore pageclick here
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.

7.  ALWAYS MEASURE YOUR BIT FROM INSIDE DIAMETER
WHERE YOUR HORSES LIPS WILL BE TOUCHING
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
8.  DON'T BE AFRAID TO TRY NEW BITS
BORROW FROM FRIENDS IF YOU HAVE TO
AFTER YOU RIDE FOR A FEW MINUTES Your HORSE WILL TELL YOU IF THEY LIKE THIS Bit
.
.
.
.
.
.
.

9.  LISTEN TO YOUR HORSE
they wILL TELL YOU iF A BIT IS BOTHERING THEM...IS PINCHING THEM
TASTES BAD...HITTING SENSITIVE TEETH...IF THEY HAVE A TOOTH ABSCESS
.
.
.
.
.

10 . ALWAYS CHANGE THE BITS YOU USE
YOU NEVER WANT YOUR HORSE TO GET TOO USED TO ONE CERTAIN BIT.
MOST HORSE LIKE A CHANGE...SOME DO NOT .
.
.
.
YOU MUST ALWAYS OFFER YOUR HORSE A CHOICE
BE ATTENTIVE TO WHAT THEY ARE TRYING TO TELL YOU.
.
.
.
all horses need to alternate between bits
and from bits to hackamores to keep them light
and searching for
"  the feel  "
.
.
.
for a good riding draft you must get custom bits

order your custom bit today..change your life.
.
.
for each horse
an owner should provide
 at least
6
bit and hackmore options
on any given day

.
.Hi, Sara.
I'm happy to have found your site.  .............Spent quite a while last night looking at and reading about your bits. .................... I got to your site by  googling "western style draft horse bits." ..................... Believe it or not, I  put  all that in there.  ........................     Anyway, I have a Clyde-cross who has a 5-1/2" mouth,  so not quite as big as a real draft.......................
I've been looking for  something I could afford in the 'bucharoo' line and have found some  very beautiful, silver engraved cheeks........Can't get them in that size, .................as  you well know that most standard bits are 5".  So, when I have to  go into the custom bits, the price jumps WAY up.................................  So, now I've  gotten to you.    ..............................  Please let me know about something like this: 5-1/2"  flat spade mouthpiece, about 7" cheeks.,,,,.......................,,Mouthpiece can be all S.S. or  have some copper, maybe the little copper roller. Cheeks will be  determined by price. ...............................
I do want a bit that will help get his head  set  naturally. ..................... I have light, soft hands, and this guy is ready  for the spade.................................  I'm wanting the weight of the bit, rein chains and  heavy(ish) rawhide reins that I won't even use (hardly), maybe just  lift them a little to stop. ...........................
Well, you see where I'm going with  this.  .......................     I've used this horse for driving - CDEs - for quite  a few years with a mullen mouth butterfly but am now mostly just  riding............................... In driving I just wiggled my little fingers a little and  clucked to him to get him flexed at the poll. ....................... Now, ..................I just want  him to go on down the
trail on the vertical without any hullabaloo./ ......................Can you help me?  ..........................Please give me some prices to think about.  ...........................Thank you so much, and I'll be waiting to hear from you. .

.head down  and keeps going.

Hello,

I went on your website looking for a bit for my 5 year old Clydesdale.

I have had my clyde for over a year now and he was trained in a 7” snaffle that was bought in a tack store. ................................I really don’t think it was made for a draft horse ..........but ............it was the largest I could find. .....................It looks like he needs a bigger bit but........................... I thought I would look into actual Draft bits. ....................................Cody did really well while he was in training with this bit but right now he seems to not want to stop and.............................. puts his head down and just pulls through the bit and keeps going................................. I know that Cody needs something different in bits but........................... I am not sure what so I was ..................hoping someone could help me out and that’s when I saw your website..................... Are draft bits different in size then a regular size horse bit? .............. Thank you,  ....................Julie Carlson

.

thanks Julie.............
...i wanted to tell you about .....another Julie ....from Bakersfield ca. ......................   we made a bit for her Belgian.....................she is on my friends page.....email her....she is a definite good connection for you....the next step up from a regular oring snaffle would be this bit

BITS/bita003.JPG
it is called an Argentine snaffle...................very handy little bit to have hanging around.......................i use many versions in my own barn.......................it is still a snaffle port but ......................you will have the added effectiveness of ..................a curb strap........................... or even more effective  curb chain ............................it is lightweight and easy to use with 2  or 4 reins....................your horse may or may not still pull thru this one..........................depends on what type of curb you put on it........................this bit is the most mild..........the kindest....but probly the most ineffective for your problem.....................

the next step more aggressive would be this bit.......port is called a corrective port....it is more severe.......more effective than the top bit......your horse definitely wont pull as much with this bit.....but still may pull a little if he is really bad......
   BITS/bitc002.JPG

.
the third and most aggressive bit.......the one we made for Julie  and Bentley......her horse was taking off with her at the canter.....really bad......your CLYDE will definitely not pull on this one ever........but you cant ride in  it every day.....only when you need to fix  or correct him....it is called an extreme correction port and its made to stop an aggressive horse right in its tracks....your horse probably does not need this severe of a bit....but i can definitely scale this one wayyyyy down
 BITS/bite004.JPG

my recommendation for you is to get the two top bits..................... and alternate between ............the two until your.............. horse gets the picture................. hope this helps....let me know any questions you have. .......................... there are many other options. ................... these are just the basic three. ...............................Sara shadla    :0).
